Mowing

At what height should the lawn be cut?

We recommend mowing your lawn at a height of 2 1/2 to 3 inches.   The reason for this is, the length of the grass blade is directly proportional to the length of the root system.  If a lawn is cut too short, it's root system will not have the ability to retain moisture, fight weed infestation and most importantly withstand Winnipeg's hot summer weather.

How often does the lawn need mowing?

This all depends on how fast the lawn is growing.  A good rule of thumb is that the grass blade should never be reduced in length by more than 1/3 of its length.  By allowing the grass blades to become too long, after mowing the remaining part of the blade will have a difficult time healing.

What time of day should I mow the lawn?

The best time to mow your lawn is in the morning or evening, as these are the cooler parts of the day.  When possible, try to mow the lawn when it is dry..  Mowing after watering or rainfall can promote the spread of lawn diseases.

How do I measure the height my mower cuts at?

The best way to measure the height that your mower is cutting is to place the mower on flat level ground and measure the distance from the ground to the bottom edge of the side of your mower.

When should I sharpen my mower blade?

We recommend sharpening your mower blade at least once a season or after approximately 20 mows.  Using a dull lawnmower blade will result in rough cuts, which will take longer to heal than a clean cut from a sharp blade.
